BRWB 2023

The first day started with a visit to the Segula Test Center in Rodgau-Dudenhofen/Germany (for more information about the test track, you can find an interesting article (in german) here read more (wird in neuem Tab geöffnet) ), where Mr Thomas Jordan, the site manager, gave detailed information about the test tracks and special functions of the test facility. Dinner in the evening rounded off the first day. This allowed all participants to have vibrant discussions and an exchange of experiences.

On the 3rd of March, Prof. Dr J. Stefan Bald, former head of the Institute of Road and Pavement Construction, opened the workshop and introduced his successor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jia Liu. She gave a brief overview of her professional career and the reorganisation of the institute. After the welcome by Professor Dr Thomas Walther (Vice President of Innovation and International Affairs, TU Darmstadt), Dr Gerhard Faust and Dr Rainer Hart took over the moderation of the workshop.

As in previous years, the workshop was a forum for vehicle and design engineers, test track operators and users, and construction companies to present and discuss the latest developments in the automotive test environment. The agenda included the following topics: Renewal of the high-speed test track at the Ford proving ground Lommel in Belgium_(Dr Robert Rasmussen (The Transtec Group, Inc., USA), Erik de Vries, (Lommel PG, Belgium) and Karl -Heinz Schultes (SMB, Germany); Fiber Optic Technology for Monitoring Asphalt Roads- (Dr.-Ing. Martin Lipus (Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, Germany); Asphalt evenness – From Design to Realisation, Best Practice – (Jarno Zaffelli (Dromo Circuit Design, Italy).; Recyclability of Road Construction Material and Limits of Reuse for Test Track Construction – Mario Peiker (Hart Consult International GmbH, Germany); The Black Unknown – Bitumen/Binder- Tatjana Kunsic (IBQ – Institut für Baustoff- Qualitätssicherung, Germany); State of the Art in Paving – The Way to Autonomous Paving- Alfons Horn (MOBA, Germany) and Leandro Harries (TU Darmstadt, Germany)

To illustrate the integration of research and practice, the Institute of Transportation Infrastructure Engineering was closely involved with three short presentations: Asphalt Temperatur, Maximilian Schütz (TU Darmstadt, Germany); Pre-Compaction Process, Leandro Harries (TU Darmstadt, Germany); Sealing of Joints, David Kempf (TU Darmstadt, Germany). The results are expected to contribute to an innovative and sustainable way of developing the roads and rail construction sector.

The workshop concluded after a discussion with Prof. Dr -Ing. Jia Liu and Dr -Ing. Gerhard Faust with the participants. We want to thank all participants and speakers and hope to see you at the next BRWB workshop on March 1st 2024.

Der 11. Workshop „Bad Roads Well Build“ hat am 3. März 2023 erfolgreich stattgefunden. Organisiert wurde er wie immer vom Institut für Verkehrswegebau der Technischen Universität Darmstadt. In diesem Jahr trafen sich mehr als 130 Teilnehmer aus 20 Ländern und 71 Unternehmen in Darmstadt.

Der erste Tag begann mit einer Besichtigung des Segula Test Centers in Rodgau-Dudenhofen/Deutschland (hier finden Sie einen interessanten Kurzbericht zur Teststrecke Mehr erfahren (wird in neuem Tab geöffnet) ), wo Herr Thomas Jordan, der Standortleiter, ausführliche Informationen über die Teststrecken und speziellen Funktionen der Testanlage gab. Ein gemeinsames Abendessen rundete den ersten Tag ab. Dies ermöglichte allen Teilnehmern eine lebhafte Diskussion und einen Erfahrungsaustausch.

Am 3. März eröffnete Prof. Dr. J. Stefan Bald, ehemaliger Leiter des Instituts für Straßen- und Belagsbau, den Workshop und stellte seine Nachfolgerin Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jia Liu vor. Sie gab einen kurzen Überblick über ihren beruflichen Werdegang und die Umstrukturierung des Instituts. Nach der Begrüßung durch Professor Dr. Thomas Walther (Vizepräsident für Innovation und Internationales, TU Darmstadt) übernahmen Dr. Gerhard Faust und Dr. Rainer Hart die Moderation des Workshops.

Wie in den vergangenen Jahren war der Workshop ein Forum für Fahrzeug- und Konstruktionsingenieure, Prüfstreckenbetreiber und -nutzer sowie Baufirmen, um die neuesten Entwicklungen im automobilen Testumfeld zu präsentieren und zu diskutieren. Auf der Tagesordnung standen folgende Themen: Erneuerung der Hochgeschwindigkeits-Teststrecke auf dem Ford-Testgelände Lommel in Belgien_(Dr. Robert Rasmussen (The Transtec Group, Inc., USA), Erik de Vries, (Lommel PG, Belgien) und Karl-Heinz Schultes (SMB, Deutschland); Glasfasertechnologie für die Überwachung von Asphaltstraßen- (Dr.- Ing. Martin Lipus (Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam, GFZ Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum, Deutschland); Asphalt-Ebenheit – Vom Entwurf bis zur Realisierung, Best Practice – (Jarno Zaffelli (Dromo Circuit Design, Italien). Recycelbarkeit von Straßenbaumaterial und Grenzen der Wiederverwendung für den Teststreckenbau – Mario Peiker (Hart Consult International GmbH, Deutschland); Die schwarze Unbekannte – Bitumen/Bindemittel- Tatjana Kunsic (IBQ – Institut für Baustoff- Qualitätssicherung, Deutschland); Stand der Technik im Straßenbau – Der Weg zum autonomen Pflaster – Alfons Horn (MOBA, Deutschland) und Leandro Harries (TU Darmstadt, Deutschland)

Um die Verzahnung von Forschung und Praxis zu verdeutlichen, war das Institut für Verkehrswegebau mit drei Kurzvorträgen eng eingebunden: Asphalttemperatur, Maximilian Schütz (TU Darmstadt, Deutschland); Vorverdichtungsprozess, Leandro Harries (TU Darmstadt, Deutschland); Fugenabdichtung, David Kempf (TU Darmstadt, Deutschland). Es wird erwartet, dass die Ergebnisse zu einer innovativen und nachhaltigen Entwicklung des Straßen- und Schienenbausektors beitragen werden.

Der Workshop endete mit einer Diskussion von Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jia Liu und Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Faust mit den Teilnehmern. Wir bedanken uns bei allen Teilnehmern und Referenten und hoffen, Sie beim nächsten BRWB-Workshop am 1. März 2024 wiederzusehen.
